Last days in 2010 are here, it is time to draw some conclusions on which have been the best movies released of this year. Not included in this list are the movies released in
December. Despite the Box Office success, these are the movie that, personally, I think are among the best of 2010.

10 Despicable Me - Watch the Trailer -
The computer animated comedy film, stars the voices of Steve Carell, Russell Brand and tells the story of a villain who plans to use three innocent orphans to steal the moon. This is the perfect family comedy and it is very funny to watch the army of Minions, yellow pill-shaped creatures that assist the villain in carrying out his plan.

9 Unthinkable - Watch the Trailer -
This movie by director Gregor Jordan (Bufalo Soldiers) plays intelligently around the question “Do the ends justify the means?”. A psychological thriller centered around a clandestine interrogatory by a FBI counter terrorism team, who press an American citizen suspected to have planned three atomic bombs in three different US cities. Well acted by Michael Sheen (Frost/Nixon), Samuel L. Jackson, Carrie-Ann Moss (Matrix), this film in some moments is hard to watch, because of the cruelty of the torture shown in it, but makes the audience think on in what a dilemma our society have to live today.

With Harrison Ford and Brendan Frasier, “Extraordinary Measures” is a drama that was released in January. The film is based on the true story of John Crowley, a corporate executive, who leaves his secure income and creates a company to develop a drug to save the lives of his children, who have a life-threatening disease (Pompe Disease). This is a very moving movie and makes you see how in reality the corporate world works.

“Kick Ass” is a super hero comedy movie, based on a comic book with the same name. This movie tells the story of an high school student, Dave Lizewski, who one day decides to become a super hero even tough he has no powers. The film is very funny but has in it a lot of violence and fighting scenes with child actress ChloĆ« Moretz. Starting like a classic “teen movie”, it is definitely surprising the way that the movie develops.

The latest work director of Clint Eastwood, “Hereafter” moves along the mystery of thin line between life and afterlife.
With Matt Demon in the role of George Lonegan, a former professional psychic, the drama is centered around the life of three people that have been touched by nearly death experiences. The movie is deeply moving, well directed and never gets close to the supernatural genre that we all know.

Directed by Antoine Fuqua (Training Day) “Brooklyn Finest” revolves around three Brooklyn policeman that have a very different relationship with their work, one is working undercover (Don Cheadle), one is a corrupted (Hawke) and finally Richard Gere’s character is in his last days of duty. The action-drama is well played by the actors especially Ethan Hawke, who makes you, at the same time, love and hate his character. In the end the three cops all get together in the same deadly place not leaving too much space for redemption.

Definitely the best comedy of the year, this movie tells the story of an unconventional family with two children conceived by artificial insemination by the same sperm donor. The family is changed forever when the kids decide to bring their biological father in their life. The film shows the audience that there is no difference between unconventional and conventional family in the end is always love that strength the relationship between people. Great performances by all the actors, Mark Rufalo, Julianne Moore, Anette Bening and Josh Hutcherson are perfect for their roles but Mia Wasikowska is superb in her role. We definitely will see more of this young Australian actress.

Inception, is a cerebral action thriller set in a world where technology exists to enter the human mind. A skilled thief, played by Leonardo Di Caprio, is given the task to plant an idea in the mind of a heir during the dream state, when the mind is at its most vulnerable. With an original plot, a great cast, wonderful special effects and suspense “Inception” is definitely among the best movies of the year.

The Social Network is a 2010 drama film about the founding of the internet social networking website Facebook and the resulting lawsuits. On a fall night in 2003, Harvard undergrad Mark Zuckerberg sits down at his computer and heatedly begins a fury of blogging and programming about the girl who just dumped him. That night in his dorm room Mark started “FaceMash” what can be considered the predecessor of “Facebook”. The movie paints the founder of Facebook as a cold blooded antihero. Well directed by David Fincher (Fight Club) and terrifically acted by Jesse Eisenberg (Zombieland), this movie will be probably receive several Academy Awards Nominations.

Produced in 2009 but released in U.S. in April 2010 “The Secret in Their Eyes” is the best movie of the year without any doubts. A thriller set in Argentina and tells the story of a retired policeman who is starting to write his first novel based on a homicide case that he worked on earlier in his career. With flashbacks starting from 1974 the director, Juan J. Campanella, alternates drama, suspense and sometimes humor, all revolved around thirty years of Argentina’s history. Ricardo Darin is simply terrific in the main role of Benjamin Esposito and in moments hilarious when his character interacts with his assistant Pablo Sandoval. The Secret of their Eyes won the Oscar for best foreigner movie in the 2010 Oscar’s ceremony. Hollywood is already planning to re-make an American version of this movie, but if the thrilling part of the story is easily reproducible in an American environment, more ambitious will be create elements typical of the Argentinean political aspects of that time.

As expected not always the best movies are the same that attract the majority of the audience at the box office, especially in our era where the box office are flooded by people looking for 3D and astonishing special effects…….but this is another story for another blog.

Hereafter was quite good, I think Eastwood is a great director. This was believable (well except for the psychic part) and it was real, with no extraneous hollywood fluff.
Glad you put it on the list. Want to see Inception because of all the hype. An will check out "el Secreto de suss ojos" when I get the chance.
Thanks!
