With this blog I would like to share with you a thought that comes to my mind every time I see actors “not so young anymore” making action movies. Are they credible?
It is not coincidental that I’m writing this article the weekend that the new Bruce Willis’s action movie “Surrogate” is coming out. I personally did not see the movie yet and I did not hear anything about it.
Certainly Bruce Willis with the “Die Hard” saga made his name and became one of the most known actors of his time; but he is not only an action actor, he gave us a wonderful interpretation of Dr. Malcolm Crowe in the “Sixth Sense”, he also has a very good comedic tempo and can definitely play many different characters.
In my opinion, if he can dance (we know he can sing, he has several published CDs), he would be a complete actor. I guess at 53, Hollywood producers and the general public want to see Bruce Willis more in an action movie than in other genres.
Ok we concede this, Bruce is still credible as an action movie star.
Now, what about Sylvester Stallone?
There are news that is latest work “The Expendables”, another action movie, will come out in 2010; at age 63, is he a really credible action star?
I loved Stallone’s movies and I think he was one of the best action actors in the 80s. A great screenwriter and a very decent director (do not forget that he wrote and directed most of his movies).
In 2006 we appreciated “Rocky Balboa” because of the affection to the character, but was really necessary revive “Rambo???”; and now making another action movie is really a good idea?
In the “Expendables” are starring today well-known action stars as Jason Statham and Jet Li and they team up with Sly in a near-mission impossible operation to overthrow a dictator in South America. Starring in the movie there are also Arnold Schwarzenegger, Mickey Rourke, Eric Roberts and UFC star Randy Couture.
Of course all depends on many other factors, the plot, the actors, the director, the dialogues and unfortunately today to the money invested in the promotion of the movie itself.
We’ll have to wait till 2010 to see if Sly will be credible and successful in this movie.
Anyway Sylvester Stallone is not alone, there are many famous actors from the 80s and 90s action movies that are still making them today:
Steven Seagal makes more than one movie a year, Jean
Claude Van Damme made his last movie in 2008 and the list can go on and on.
All these movies went directly to DVD or had a very limited release in theatres.
I think that an artist of the caliber of Sylvester Stallone is capable of making very valuable movies but I wonder why he doesn’t follow the steps of Clint Eastwood; keep working by making movies from behind the camera and acting in different roles.
If he follows this advice, he could have a very long and successful directing career.
Yes, time passes by for everybody, even for them!
I always wanted to think that age is not a limit that you can still do anything you want...of course, at different levels.
Also, in other side, I like new faces to have the opportunity of making their dreams come true.
Let's go to the movies! Let's see what they have to offer and why they thought they still could hit it.

what is meant by credible?
personally i never thought much of Stallone. I think he
was a bad actor that turned into a mediochre actor, then made some more bad and mediochre movies.
Willis is a good actor, and he can play almost any role.
Comparing Stallone or any of the other action stars mentioned with Eastwood, is in my opinion foolish. Eastwood, was a decent 2nd rate action actor, who got better and better, and turned into one of the best directors of the late 20th century. "White hunter black heart" was a brilliant movie which was not understood because no-one outside of hollywood knew what John Huston was really like. "Unforgiven", and "Bridges of Madison County" were brilliant movies far beyond the capabilities of Stallone. van Dam, Siegal, and just about anyone else.
Ah, you didn't mention Sean Connery. He is just so cool, that even when not credible you don't care. Even at 60+ he always gets to have sex with the most beautiful woman in the movie, ...

Tony,
I didn't like Stallone much when I was little, I went to see his movies because of my brothers
But after, it's not like he has become my favorite actor, but I have to say that he got where he wanted. I admire that.
I agree with you on Clint Eastwood, he got better to become something very big. But again, I didn't like him years ago.
I don't think what you read on the Blog is a comparison. It's an admiration for an actor and because so a critic to him.
Hi Tony,
Thank you for your comment.
When I say credible I just wonder if an actor, in this case Stallone, at 63, can still have an "Audience" making the same movies that he was making 20 years ago.
I'm not comparing Stallone to Eastwood, they are completely different actors and directors. I'm just suggesting that would be better for Stallone to direct more. He might surprise everybody like Eastwood did. Do not forget also that Eastwood started directing in the 70s and only in the 90s he made the movies that you mentioned.
We never know!
