Maria Riboli: Avenue Q made in Italy E-mail

I had the honor to see the opening night of Avenue Q in Italy a week ago…and I still feel the chills in my body.

I’ve seen this great show here on Broadway few years ago.

The Avenue Q Italy cast

I remember sitting down and laughing so hard from beginning to end and leaving the theater so uplifted…

When my very good friend Stefano Genovese told me he wanted to take the show to Italy I was so very excited for him…
I knew it was going to be a tough road for him, but I knew in my heart that if anyone could do it, it was him!

And Tuesday October 20th, sitting down at the Olimpico theater in Rome, Italy…I was able to witness the amazing work, he did!

Mr. Genovese translated, adapted and directed Avenue Q, with a smart, witty, fresh and direct approach.

He made it suitable for an Italian audience, without losing the charm and the amusing side of the show…he did an outstanding job translating it into Italian.

That is always been a very difficult task for musicals in Italy. The translations usually feel a little forced, but this time I saw people walking out of the theater humming the songs they had just heard.

The cast is also outstanding.

Among them Gabriele Foschi (Princeton and Rod) shows so many sides of his talent, he will capture you with his unique and wonderful voice, he will make you laugh so hard you’ll have tears in your eyes and he will touch your heart in the sweetest way.

Mauro Simone (Trekky and Nicky) a fresh breeze on that stage, a chameleon as well, a master with his voice and his stage presence is like a magnet for the audience.

Elena Nieri (Kate and Lucy) a young talent who holds her ground very well on stage. Another wonderful voice and a strong presence that compliments the other leads just perfectly.

Another nod has to be for Cinzia Pennesi, musical director for the show. A great talent in the music world in Italy who brings wonderful melodies and music to this success.

If you’re in Italy do not miss the opportunity to see what critics called “The best show in a long time”…

They will be in Rome until November 1st then off to Milan, Genoa, Turin and many more…for dates and more info on the show go to: www.avenueq.it
