Maria Riboli "For the love of the art" E-mail

Every time I get a new student in my acting class, I always ask him or her to tell me a little bit about them.
I then ask them why they are taking the class and why they want to act.
Some of the answers are very interesting to me.

Stefano Genovese & Maria Riboli during a rehearsal for BAAAHHH!! (2007)

I see the passion inside some of those eyes and that for me is something so refreshing; that is what makes my job so much easier and so much fun.
I see who really works at it, who puts all his or her heart and soul in it, I see the progress they make week after week, I know, they’ve been rehearsing, searching, practicing.
This amazing craft is not something that you can just jump in and think that you’ll be an actor after 4 classes.

Like everything in life, practice makes perfect, and it’s a long road, but it’s a beautiful one!
I see some students coming into my class and when I ask them why they are there sometimes I hear “Because I want to be rich and famous”…I smile and I tell them that they are in the wrong class.
You have to be in this art for the love of it!
I, of course, wish to every single one of them, to be rich and famous…but that is not what this art is about!
Acting is about a dream, a passion, a desire you have inside.
If you think about it, this is one of the very few ‘jobs’ that people are willing to do for free…ask someone who has a 9 to 5 job if she or he would do it for free…I don’t think they would…and I don’t blame them.
But this craft is about the love you have for it, for your character, for the play you’re in, for the movie you star in.
I love the rehearsal process for example, and not all actors do…but for me it’s beautiful! I’m never tired, I could rehearse for hours and hours and I’m always looking for more. The process of discovery of your character for me it’s so rewarding and gives me so much strength.
You have to have a passion for acting, you have to commit to it 100%...
You don’t stop being an actor when you’re done with your class, or with your rehearsal, or with your play…it’s in your blood, in your eyes, in your breath...in your heart!
I leave you with a quote from Konstantin Stanislavsky that epitomizes my humble words here:
“Love the art in yourself, not yourself in the art”
