I’ve casted many shows in the past as a director and it’s very interesting being on the other side.
I remember a casting I had for a show few years back, it was a big cast and I remember receiving more than 600 headshots,
thankfully they were via email!
I remember looking at every single one of them, every face, reading every resume…
It was hard to pick and at the end we came up with around 50 actors to audition.
I have to say I had a feeling for a few of those actors from the moment I saw their pictures and funny enough I ended up casting them.
Being on the other side you really notice everything, from the moment the actor steps into the room to the moment he or she steps out.
The kind of vibe you get, how prepared they really are, how much you can direct them…
You see who’s nervous and who’s ready to give it everything they’ve got!
You have to be prepared! Do not show up to an audition just trying to swing it…it will not work…and trust me people do remember bad auditions!
Think about why you want to audition for that character, what is it that make you want to play her/him?
I don’t go for any casting notice out there.
It has to move me, the character has to be somewhat challenging for me and touching.
Try to understand what kind of actor you are…take a look at your resume…look at the role you’ve been playing so far…are you a leading man or a supporting character? Do you play strong women or shy girls?
It will tell you a lot about you and what kind of work you’re drawn to.
Remember before anything else it’s your choice!
