Maria Riboli: "Variety is the spice of life" E-mail

The other day I was talking to a fellow actor about a play full of characters who come from all different backgrounds. That is something I truly enjoy and appreciate. I love to see plays where the casting is not considered the ‘usual’ casting, where we can see a Latino actor or an Asian actress in a role that might be seen just as ‘Caucasian’.

Sometimes I hear actors complaining that they are not getting a role because they don’t fit the mold, because they have an accent, because the color of their skin is different…and I always tell them that, That is what makes them unique…that, That is a gift!

Every single one of us is a gift, every single one of us has something unique and special!
How boring would life be if we would all look the same, sound the same, act the same…

For an actor it is extremely important to notice all the nuances, the different colors and layers that we have.

I always tell my students to remember that every single person out there has a different walk…and there are plenty of people out there and to me that is amazing, amazingly beautiful…

You then have to remember that, That walk changes if…I’m running late…I’m going on a date…I just got fired…I just won the lottery…we react to things! There’s never just one level, there’s never just one way!
Embrace who you are and celebrate it!

Do not label anything and anybody…we are all human beings, beautiful and unique creatures!

    Dear Maria,
Your students are so lucky to have you,
How difficult is to accept yourself when the most important person in your learning, your teacher, doesn't appreciate variety, doesn't help you to get the best out of you, doesn't give you the confidence you need to be in such a competitive world...
    I'm sure they love you!

  • tonydunc  - assessment vs judgement

One more comment and then i will do what I am supposed to be doing.

I like to make a distinction between making a judgement and an assessment. In general a judgement is a determination that is set in stone. That some person has a characteristic that will never change. They are "lazy", Briliant", "Stuck up", etc. I especially find this in teaching where people have made self judgements. that they are
'unco-ordinated, or they "learn" a certain way.

I try to avoid making determinations that are final, so I say that I make assessments, which has more of a connotation of something that is likely to change. I think honesty as a teacher is vitally important, and I think that being supportive is important, so giving people feedback that is accurate, but also is focused on what is positive, and where improvements can be made makes a difference. I have found that in many cases this can help change peoples negative attitudes about how they do things. But it often...
