The new season at the Flea Theater in downtown Manhattan is in full swing and their current production "The great recession" was a hit with the audience on their first preview
last Friday night.
As the title suggests, the evening had 6 short original plays in store for it's sold out theater.
Those plays were commissioned by the Flea to 6 young and gifted writers (Thomas Bradshaw, Sheila Callaghan, Erin Courtney, Will Eno, Itamar Moses and Adam Rapp)
The writers were asked to create six, ten minutes plays, about the current economic crisis, and the very talented Bats (the resident acting company) are bringing all these different, funny, disturbing and relatable characters to life.
There's something for everyone in this show. You'll witness very intense pieces, that might only seem absurd at the beginning, but that will make you think and consider how far you would go to get out of a hole you're in.
I personally found some plays more intriguing than others, but I expected that to be the case, I think everyone will walk out with stronger feelings for one piece other than another.
The highlight of the night for me was UNUM written by Will Eno and directed by Jim Simpson.
I found this play to have a lot of heart, to be able to describe situations that might not be personally yours, but you will still be able to recognize yourself in them.
Everybody is connected; all the stories somehow seem tied by the same red ribbon.
And even though it deals with some heavy issues it left me with some 'hope' and that I truly enjoyed.
It's an intense show with 43 talented actors on stage.
The show is currently in previews and set to open on December 10th.
“The great recession” will run until December 30th at the Flea Theater.
