I grew up with black and white TV and saw Bell Telephone Hour, Carol Burnett and other variety programs until color Tv came in and then we had Cher and so many others including the first Dance in America and Great Performances and finally Live From Lincoln Center.
Unfortunately due to union rules w do not get to see as much of Broadway and live theatre as we should So when I pick something to watch, it MUST entertain me without assuming I am an idiot and need to be tricked. I hate reality shows- they are not real- just humiliating ideas of what people might put one another through if they did not have to live with the consequences of their actions. American Idol is a very ugly depiction of what outsiders think theater auditions and experiences are. So You Think You Can Dance is tough but has a very different premise. Nigel, the producer and head judge, is a dancer and behaves respectfully to each contestant, even when he says it is bad and the contestant must leave. Last year his criticisms of the dancers had to do with the lack of good ballet training. This year he is speaking strongly, of quality of movement, musicality and line. Thank you Those of us in the classical ballet world for 60 years have been trained with ALL those things and now teach ALL those things. It should be required before these performance shows air, that they should do a documentary on the real whole day of a dancer learning new choreography in unfamiliar styles, warming up, training, eating, resting, etc.-so the young kids and their parents realize what hard work our lives are. copyright©Mme Peff Modelski2009 for Forum Artistico

Yes they should show how hard is a dancer's life.
