Encuentros (Encounters) March 18 & 19 (3 concerts)

Two premieres and repertoire highlights

AGDT, the critically acclaimed modern dance company of Mexican-born Artistic Director Annabella Gonzalez, presents its Encuentros Spring Series at the Manhattan Movement and Arts Center on Friday, March 18, at 8 p.m. and Saturday, March 19, at 3 p.m. and 8 p.m. Featured are two world premieres and dances from the Company’s repertoire. Many works reflect AGDT’s Latin classicism -- a provocative mix of European and American classical music with a Latin flavor.

The varied program -- with abstract, theatrical and comedic dances -- challenges and engages. The premieres are Descent/Ascent, a quartet by Annabella Gonzalez set to an original score by classical Mexican composer Max Lifchitz of the North/South Consonance and the movement packed duet Hard by guest choreographer Jinah Parker played on the piano by Justin Hicks and sung by him and by Kenita Miller. A revision of Orange Crush, a quirky solo, will be performed to music by Joseph Pehrson sung live by contralto Christina Asher.

Repertoire by Ms. Gonzalez includes the popular quintet The Passage set to contemporary “derriere guarde” music by Stefania de Kenessey and Exit, a solo of a fish-like woman emerging from an amoebic object, based on traditional Mexican instruments. Also on the program are the duet Chrome Waters 2 that was featured in a January Kaplan showcase at Alvin Ailey with music by Schubert and Mozartmania, an outrageous group comedy to an early Mozart piece performed with glittering costumes!

El Heraldo described AGDT’s work at the International Palomar Festival in Mexico as “Poetry in Movement”. Anderson of the New York Times wrote that Gonzalez is “fond of teasing normalcy”Encuentros is made possible in part with public funds from The New York City Department of Cultural Affairs, with funds from the Fund for Creative Communities, supported by the New York State Council on the Arts and administered by the Lower Manhattan Cultural Council, and with support by The Harkness Foundation for Dance.
